River & Music

Rivers flow through our world since ancient times, enabling people and goods to move from one place to another. They are a prerequisite for trade, transport and travel. But not only do they provide a link for businesses and industries, even more so, they connect nations, cultures, and most importunately, human beings. With great pleasure we can announce that world leading artists Rolando Villazón and Olga Peretyatko have followed our invitation and are going to join us on our Cruise on the River Danube. They will excite us with exclusive performances on board as well as in Vienna – giving us the pleasure to experience their masterful artistry in truly special environments. To further enhance your experience, the magnificent “Plattform K+K”, an ensemble consisting of prime members of the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra, will perform aboard the ship; and provide the musical finale of our cruise with a concert at the “Franz Liszt Academy of Music” in Budapest. It is our mission to provide you with an inspiring travel experience that is culturally enriching, exclusive and unique. We want to enable you to indulge body and mind while discovering the wonders of European metropoles. We have taken great care to make all the arrangements so that this trip will become a truly moving experience for you, our esteemed guests. MS6 Family & Team

The Artists

Through his uniquely compelling performances on the world’s most important stages, Rolando Villazón has firmly established himself as one of the music world’s most critically acclaimed and beloved stars and as one of the leading artists of our day. Heralded as “the most charming of today’s divos” (The Times) with “a wonderfully virile voice…grandezza, elegance and power” (Süddeutsche Zeitung), Rolando Villazón versatility is peerless as he maintains successful careers as a stage director, novelist, artistic director and radio and TV personality next to his on-stage career.

Born in Mexico City, he began his musical studies at the national conservatory of his home country before joining the junior programs at the opera houses in Pittsburgh and at the San Francisco Opera. Rolando Villazón quickly made a name for himself on the international music scene after winning several prizes at Plácido Domingo‘s “Operalia” competition in 1999 (including the Zarzuela Prize and the Audience Prize). Since then, Rolando Villazón has been a regular guest at the State Operas of Berlin, Munich and Vienna, La Scala in Milan, the Royal Opera House Covent Garden, the Metropolitan Opera New York and the Salzburg Festival, frequently working with leading orchestras and renowned conductors such as Daniel Barenboim, Antonio Pappano and Yannick Nézet-Séguin. In 2011 Rolando Villazón made his directing debut at Lyon Opera and
since then has directed for the Festspielhaus Baden-Baden, the Deutsche Oper Berlin, the Deutsche Oper am Rhein Düsseldorf, the Vienna Volksoper, the Semperoper in Dresden, the Théatre des Champs- Elysées, and most recently, the 2022 Salzburg Festival, where his production of Il barbiere di Siviglia with an all-star cast led by Cecilia Bartoli received widespread critical and public acclaim.

The 2022-23 season brings Rolando Villazón to some of the world’s most important stages, in repertoire ranging from baroque to contemporary music. He makes his role debut as Loge in Wagner’s Das Rheingold in a new production of the tetralogy directed by Dmitry Tcherniakov and conducted by Christian Thielemann. Later in the season, he portrays one of his signature roles, Monteverdi’s Orfeo, in new productions at Dresden Semper Opera and Santa Fe Opera, the latter conducted by Harry Bicket. Audiences in Berlin can also experience him as Edgardo in Donizetti’s Lucia di Lammermoor when he returns to Deutsche Oper Berlin. The 2023 Mozart Week in Salzburg , will be curated by Rolando Villazón, and sees the tenor perform Mozart’s Requiem with the Vienna Philharmonic.

Olga Peretyatko, one of the world’s most sought-after sopranos, made her international break-through after winning Plácido Domingo’s prestigious Operalia Competition, since then she has been a regular guest at the world’s most important opera houses and concert halls.
In the 2022/23 season, Olga Peretyatko makes her role debut as Elettra in Mozart‘s opera Idomeneo at the Berlin State Opera. The long-awaited new production by David McVicar is conducted by Sir Simon Rattle.

There is hardly a major opera house that has not yet invited her to sing lead roles, including Deutsche Oper Berlin, the State Operas in Berlin, Munich, Hamburg and Vienna, Zurich Opera, Lausanne Opera, Opera Monte Carlo, La Fenice in Venice, Milan’s Teatro alla Scala, Teatro Real in Madrid, Gran Teatre del Liceu in Barcelona, Opéra Bastille in Paris, Netherlands Opera in Amsterdam, La Monnaie in Brussels, the Bolshoi Theatre in Moscow, the Mariinsky Theatre in St. Petersburg, and the Metropolitan Opera in New York. Olga Peretyatko has collaborated with the world’s most renowned directors, including Robert Lepage, whose acclaimed 2009 production of Stravinsky’s Le Rossignol in Toronto confirmed her status as one of the top sopranos of our time.
Peretyatko’s recital schedule has included a performance under the Eiffel Tower for the Bastille Day celebrations in front of a live audience of 600,000 people and an international TV audience of several million viewers. In North America, she sang Strauss’ Four Last Songs at the Kennedy Center in Washington D. C. with the National Symphony Orchestra. The same repertoire was featured on a tour of China with the Orchestre Symphonique de Montréal and Maestro Kent Nagano;
China-Tournee mit dem Orchestre Symphonique de Montréal.
its concert recording made in Nante is regularly broadcasted on ARTE. In 2018, Olga Peretyatko gave a highly acclaimed first solo recital at Milan’s Teatro alla Scala.

Plattform K+K Vienna is a young, independent chamber music ensemble, which aims bring rarely played pieces back to life.
K+K stands for Kirill Kobantschenko, principal violinist of the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra and founder of Plattform. Influenced by a broad musical horizon ranging from classical to jazz and electronic music, he has gathered friends and colleagues around him who share his passion, being important representatives of Vienna as a city of music and of Austria as a country of music.
(Viola), Bartosz Sikorski (Kontrabass), Christoph Eggner (Klavier) und Christian Bakanic (Akkordeon) virtuos Wiener Klassik mit neuen Klängen.

K+K thus also sees itself as a homage to the imperial and royal music tradition of the country. The idea of establishing the ensemble as a platform stands for the desire for the greatest possible artistic freedom and for a creative breeding ground which, with changing line-ups, never fails to surprise the listener.

Oder vielleicht doch? Denn beim Neujahrskonzert 2018 gestaltete Plattform K+K Vienna den Pausenfilm.

depart at approx. 18:00

Passau, Germany’s charming gateway to the Southeast, combines the beauty of the unique location between three rivers with the wealth of nearly two thousand years of history. From St. Stephen's Cathedral, home of the largest cathedral organ, in the world to the historic city centre with the bishop’s residence to Veste Oberhaus, a medieval Fortress that is now an art museum, numerous attractions invite you for a visit. One word to describe Passau: Picturesque!

arrive at 09:30 – depart at 20:00

A city with a rich history, the settlements around Regensburg date back to the Stone age. Its current name has its roots in the Celtic name Radasbona, which can be traced back as far as 90 AD. The city is best known for its historic city centre, with no less than 1500 buildings of historic significance. It is generally accepted that Regensburg has the largest medieval old town north of the alps. For culture lovers, the castle of Thurn and Taxis, also know as St. Emmeram, holds special significance not only for its past, but also its present: Every year, the castle holds the revered “Thurn and Taxis Castle Festival” and has hosted, amongst others, luminaries such as Jose Carreras, Edita Gruberova, and Placido Domingo. In 2006, also Rolando Villazon has performed here. We plan to visit the castle with an extended guided tour, and since Bavaria is probably best known for its beer, there will also be a brewery visit with an accompanied tasting.

arrive at 08:00 – depart at 10:00

Passau will also serve us as a convenient launchpad to the city of Salzburg and the so called “Salzkammergut”. Whilst Vienna will always be the city that gave W.A. Mozart his biggest stage and will forever be linked to him, it is Salzburg that was his home. A city that is as rich in its history as it is intimate, it has truly kept the spirit of the baroque alive. Guarded by the medieval “Festung” both high above the old town and still inexplicably connected to it, Salzburg has always been a city of the arts. As such it enabled not only the career of young Wolfgang, but also gave rise to the “Salzburg Festival”, one of the pinnacles of Music, performing and visual Arts of the Germanophone Countries. Wander the small alleyways, enjoy the views from the “Mönchsberg”, dive into history, explore and be amazed by this alpine marvel.

Wednesday, 21 June 2023

arrive at 16:30 – depart at 22:00

For those of you who have already experienced Salzburg before, and do not wish to take part in the excursion, you can alternatively explore the city of Linz as well. Like Salzburg, the City will forever be linked to an Austrian composer – in this case, it is Anton Bruckner, who was born in Ansfelden, a suburb of Linz. Today, a University and the local concert hall are named after him. It is also here, where one can start to grasp the enormous importance of the river Danube as a trade route, being home to one of the largest ports of the upper part of the river. For those who have opted for the excursion to Salzburg, we will do our best to arrange a short walk through the old town of Linz.

At night, we you can enjoy the first musical highlight of our trip:

Experience the wonderful Olga Peretyatko aboard the Amadeus Star. She has prepared a programme consisting of her favourite Arias and Songs, and will be accompanied by the “Plattform K+K” Ensemble. Look forward to an intimate and authentic musical evening.

Thursday, 22 June 2023

arrive at 08:00 – depart at 12:00

The historian Steven Beller once described it as “the most emblematic and dominant Baroque edifice” – it is with no doubt the Benedictine Abbey of Melk. Measuring 320 meters on the longest axis, it not only impresses with its size, but also with the typical playfulness of the baroque – full of ornaments with plenty of gold and brass. It is no surprise that in 2008, National Geographic Magazine named Melk Abbey the “Best Historic Destination in the World”.

arrive at 14:00 – depart at 17:30

The word “Wachau”describes an approximately 35km long stretch of the Danube Valley that is characterized by its sloping hills and mild climate. It is not only revered for its landscape, though, the land surrounding the river is also highly regarded as a wine growing region. The terroir produces excellent, dry white wines such as Riesling and the typical “Grüner Veltliner”.

& Friday 23 June 2023

arrive at June 22 22:00 – depart 23 June at 23:59

Few cities in the world are nearly synonymous with music, arts and culture – Vienna is certainly one of them. The city is steeped in tradition, yet has always been a melting pot of the different cultures, languages and lifestyle of the Habsburg monarchy – as such it has also become traditional to have an open mind.

Vienna is the place where Mozart worked, where Johann Strauss I and II lived and composed unforgettable melodies, it is where a young Beethoven was invited by Haydn to come and study, and then stayed. In Vienna, Schubert left his 8th Symphony unfinished, Gustav Mahler gave new life to the field of musical theatre, Johannes Brahms spent his later life in the city.

On your second day in Vienna (June 23rd) you can explore the city in its entirety, including some of the gastronomical highlights, such as a “Sacher Torte”. For those of you looking for some “Retail Therapy”, countless boutiques and flagship stores await you in the inner city shopping districts surrounding the “Graben” and “Kärntner Strasse".

At night, the musical highpoint of our cruise will take place:

The world-famous tenor, Rolando Villazón will give an exclusive recital for you in the Musikverein Vienna. The building is well known throughout the world as it houses the annual New Year’s Concert. We will however not be located in the “Golden Hall”; but in the “Brahms-Saal”, which is described as the “Treasure Box” of the Musikverein – it is acoustically brilliant and best suited for singers and Chamber ensembles.

Saturday 24 June 2023

arrive at 08:00 – depart at 22:00

Having left Austria, it is time to greet another Capital city: Bratislava has been the seat of the Slovak government since the nations independence in 1993. Well worth seeing are the presidential Grassalkovich Palace and the seat of government, the former archbishop's summer palace and the Gothic St. Martin's Cathedral, which has for a long time been the coronation church of Hungarian kings. The old town is a delightful place that invites you to wander around and lose yourself in the only capital of the world that borders two other countries – Bratislava sits right at the three borders of Slovakia, Hungary and Austria.

Sunday, 25 June 2023

arrive at 07:00 – depart at 08:30

Enjoy incredible views of the Danube Bend region and visit Esztergom, the former capital of Hungary. There you can see the impressive Basilica, which is the largest church in Hungary, as well as its highest building. The churches dome is among the highest in the world.

Sunday, 25 June 2023

arrive at 13:00

In Vienna, the river Danube has inspired Johann Strauss to write one of the most recognized melodies in the world. It is Budapest, however, where the River and the city are truly connected to each other. Formerly two cities, Buda on the right bank, Pest on the left bank, they were formerly unified in 1873. There is an abundance of sights to be explored – be it Buda Castle, St. Stephens Basilica or the magnificent Hungarian Parliament. For lunch we are organising a fine-dining experience in one of Hungary’s best restaurants, accompanied bya Hungarian wine tasting. Egészségére - To your health!

Throughout the day a few excursion options are provided for you here.
Your River & Music program: Franz, or in his native Hungarian, Ferenc Liszt, wa known to be an avid traveller throughout his life – however the nobility of the Habsburg empire always wanted him to return and settle in Budapest. This led to the foundation of the Royal Academy of Music in Budapest, which has become the Liszt Ferenc Academy of Music. It is here in the magnificent Art-Nouveau concert hall, where you will experience the musical finale of our trip, a concert with Plattform K+K and Christian Bakanic.

Tasteful Budapest

  • Two nights incl. Breakfast at the Four Season Gresham Palace
  • Extended City Tour Budapest
  • Coffee and Cake in the traditional Cafe Szamos, including visit of the Chocolate Museum
  • Guided tour of the Jewish Budapest, with a tasting of Kürtös kalács (Hungarian “Treecake”)
  • A visit to the house of Unicum – the world famous liqueur with a fascinating history, including a spirit tasting
  • A romantic fine dining experience

Monday, 26 June 2023

Upon embarking the ship, your guided tour of Budapest starts. During the tour, you will experience the most important sights of the city, enjoy panoramic views of the Buda hills, and see the most beautiful spots on the Pest bank. The parliament was built during the first years of the 20th century, and has since become the dominating symbol of the Hungarian capital, and an emblematic element of the river Danube. The architect Imre Steindl has taken inspiration from Houses of Parliament in London, however the 265m long building is arguably even more impressive than its anglo-saxon counterpart. From the often-bitter world of politics, we move on to a much lighter topic: Chocolate. The Szamos Chocolate museum is probably the sweetest sight of Budapest. You will learn about the history and will have the opportunity to taste various chocolate styles. Not only that – if you want, you can even make your own chocolate!

Once you have statisified your sweet tooth, you will be driven to the legendary Four Seasons Gresham Palace. A full luxury Experience, this house has a rich history and will certainly meet all your demands. It is located right at the famous chain bridge, which connects the former cities of Buda and Pest.

Tuesday, June 27 2023

Following your breakfast in the stately rooms of the Gresham Hotel, we will take you on a tour of the Jewish Budapest. You start in late morning with a stroll to the second-biggest synagogue in the world. Once inside, you will be able to see the entire glory of this sacred building: extending to 3 naves, it can accommodate for up to 3000 people. A rabbi will give you an informal talk about the history of jews in Hungary. After that, you can take a break with the Hungarian specialty Kürtös kalács (Tree cake) and coffee or tea. A visit to the central market hall cannot be missed – here you will find local Hungarian delicacies to taste and to buy. One other thing that Hungary is well known for is its liqueurs – however, the fascinating story of its most popular drink – the famed UNICUM – is unbeknown to most of us. In the house of UNICUM, you will learn the history of the drink as well as the history of its inventors – the Zwack family. It goes without saying that a tasting of various liqueurs will also be included.
In the evening, we have prepared a fine dining experience of the highest classes for you; we will also provide options for a concert or opera visit (programmes yet to be released)

Wednesday, June 28 2023

The final day offers you ample time to explore more of Budapest on your own, or take advantage of many of the shopping opportunities the Hungarian metropole has on offer. Depending on your personal schedule, there will be private transfers to Budapest Airport and train station.
